Our Dene Laws

Łutsël K’é's efforts to protect the Land of Our Ancestors, Thaidene Nëné, and to carry out our ongoing responsibilities within our territory are based on three laws.

Our relationship with Thaidene Nëné goes back to the time of early creation, the time of the giant animals. The first law, which is to protect the area around Ts’ąkuı Theda, was put down for us early in our relationship with Thaidene Nëné. (To understand this first law, you must know the story of Ts’ąkuı Theda.)

The creation of the second law began in 2002 when the elders of Łutsël K’é drew a map that illustrated the area they wanted to protect. When the membership in the community accepted that boundary and named the area within that boundary Thaidene Nëné in 2004, this became the second law.

A critical part of the negotiation process was ensuring that the members of the Łutsël K’é Dene First Nation understood the agreements and that every member, no matter where they lived, had the opportunity to vote on accepting or not accepting the Thaidene Nëné Establishment Agreements. When the membership voted to support the establishment agreements with 88% approval in 2018, that was the third law that the people of Łutsël K’é used to create Thaidene Nëné.

Nuwe néné, nuwe ch'anıé yunedhé xa (Our land, our culture for the future).

We’re working with our partners to permanently protect Thaidene Nëné—part of our
huge and bountiful homeland around and beyond the East Arm of Tu Nedhé.
